DOING what some business leaders expected, newly chosen Santa Monica Mayor Michael Feinstein, now the highest-ranking Green Party official in California, says he will move forward to resolve issues of concern to the city's business community. Feinstein offered an extensive look at his priorities in addressing such issues, and pointed out that he does not believe relations between business and the City Council are beyond repair. "It's not a wholesale rift," Feinstein said. "Rather, there are situations between various industries/business districts and the city, some of which are positive and harmonious and others that are contentious and challenging. This is no different than other cities across the nation." Feinstein then listed several steps he and the council plan to take that are supported by business, including: * Studying whether parking capacity should be expanded or parking lots relocated in the Third Street Promenade/downtown area; * Trying to create additional parking spaces for retail employees throughout the city to free up spaces for the public to patronize stores; and * Moving ahead with a "downtown transit mall" that would boost public transit access to the Third Street Promenade/downtown area and reduce traffic congestion.
